Cathay Pacific extends ULD management system
Second phase of blockchain-based project offers mobile app for cargo agents in Hong Kong

The second phase of Cathay Cargo’s high-tech, blockchain ULD (unit load device) management programme has begun, widening the use of the blockchain ledger system to Hong Kong cargo agents.

This follows on from the first phase which allowed stakeholders to see the locations of loaned ULDs at Hong Kong International Airport. Calvin Hui, eCargo and Digital Enablement Manager, said: ‘The first phase was a great success, with all ULDs circulating within the network captured in the blockchain system. A new feature means their location within the airport area is clearly shown.’

The second phase extends the system beyond the airport area to Hong Kong’s cargo agent community, which includes the launch of an app that truck drivers use to record ULD numbers. Data for on-loan ULDs is then captured from the app in the blockchain system. This not only provides trustworthy ULD data, but also further automates transactions between cargo agents and the Cathay Cargo Terminal, paving the way for 100 per cent paper-free operations.

Hui added: ‘With the successful launch of a mobile app for on-loan ULD transactions, together with the smart ULD system, paper-free operations are no longer just a dream.’

The next phase of the programme will start in June, when the blockchain ULD system will be rolled out to Cathay Cargo operations in Chicago, New York, Miami and Los Angeles.
