Riyadh and Dallas join the network, plus winter seasonals and frequencies
Seasonal services to Cairns and Christchurch resume - a look at Cathay Cargo’s latest capacity
29 Oct 2024

The peak coincides with the start of the winter season’s flying schedule, and there is news as Cathay Pacific’s passenger network continues to grow, and exciting developments with some seasonal services and a new destination in the US for next summer.

Cathay Pacific has successfully launched a new passenger routes to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, served by an Airbus A350 three times weekly (departing Hong Kong on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays) on top of scheduled freighter services, and recently announced a brand-new route to Dallas Fort Worth in the US, starting in the summer season next year. ‘The Riyadh and Dallas routes are actually very good complements to our Boeing 747 freighter network,’ says Anita Lo, Head of Cargo Network and Scheduling. Currently, Cathay Cargo operates a weekly freighter charter to Riyadh.

Adding to the Americas

In commercial terms, the Dallas passenger launch on 24 April 2025 will serve similar purposes as the Riyadh flight, and the route will be serviced by an Airbus A350-1000 to complement the four-times weekly freighter service. ‘While we already serve Dallas with our freighters four flights a week, the four-weekly Dallas passenger flights starting in summer 2025 will also help build our presence there and offer more regular passenger belly space for our customers,’ says Lo.

It's also worth noting that Cathay Cargo is adding five additional freighter services to the Americas during the peak. Additionally, ahead of next year’s accommodation with NorthLink Aviation at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, there are plans for alleviation this winter in the strong likelihood of snow disruption. ‘From November until January, we have some measures to mitigate the snow disruption at Anchorage,’ says Lo.

These measures will include a dedicated parking bay (ahead of next year’s permanent arrangements) to enable more predictable aircraft handling during snow, but also some flights through the winter will fly directly back to Hong Kong without the tech stop at Anchorage. ‘We have some flights that will skip Anchorage and fly either directly back from ports in the Americas or via Los Angeles,’ she adds.

South West Pacific seasonals and extra frequencies

While Cathay Pacific is celebrating 50 years of direct flights to Sydney, Cairns returns to the passenger network this winter after a break of several years,. ‘The aim is to make this an ongoing winter seasonal route,’ says Lo.

While Cairns is a seasonal route for winter tourism, the route resumption is also an opportunity for fresh produce exporters of seafood and tropical fruits such as mangoes

While this is a holiday season passenger service first and foremost, popular with the Asian leisure market seeking tropical northern Queensland sun, Head of Cargo South West Pacific Nigel Chynoweth says there is anticipation in the cargo market. ‘Agents are excited about Cathay Pacific returning to Cairns,’ says Chynoweth. ‘This is a great opportunity to export fresh produce to Hong Kong and Asia, including live coral trout and lobsters, as well as seasonal fruits, and we think these will be full flights for us.’

The with a three-flights-per-week seasonal service top Cairns runs from 17 December 2024 until 29 March 2025 served by an Airbus A330.

The winter seasonal service to Christchurch resumes on 1 December 2024 and, following its successful reintroduction last year, the flights will increase from three times to four-times weekly and be extended by a month to conclude on 29 March 2025, giving more visitors the opportunity to visit New Zealand’s beautiful southern island during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer. This is great news for the island’s exporters, as Chynoweth explains. ‘The timing fits with the cherry harvest and it’s being warmly welcomed by dairy and chilled meat shippers.’ This route will be operated by an Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

Perth is seeing an increase in its busy flights to Hong Kong from six-times weekly to daily, joined by a new flight on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. These new flights depart Perth at 11.05am and arrive in Hong Kong at 6.45pm. There will be a total of 11 flights per week to Perth in the northern hemisphere winter schedule.

Finally, for South West Pacific, the frequency to Brisbane returns to 10 flights per week, with the CX156 midnight flight going daily to Hong Kong and three weekly CX150 flights operating on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays departing Brisbane at 10.35 am and arriving at Hong Kong at 5.20 pm. ‘This gives more options for shipments to connect to Cathay Cargo’s extensive network from Hong Kong,’ says Chynoweth.
