From the Main Deck: 2025 is a year of new challenges and opportunities
Tom Owen, Director Cargo
24 Jan 2025

This year marks the launch of Cargo Pulse: our new-look way to keep you up to date with the latest news and developments at Cathay Cargo, as well as offering opinions, insight and a look behind the scenes. We’re steadily refreshing our special solutions and our services, and I’m pleased to be adding Cargo Pulse to the mix.

This year has the potential to be an inflection point after a busy and successful 2024: especially in regard to e-commerce, which gave us good base loads in 2024, and is now an area of interest as the US administration changes. We can start this year with one certainty: it is never wise to underestimate air cargo’s capacity to surprise.

A refreshed Cathay Courier

We are continuing to evolve our business to make it ready and resilient to future challenges and opportunities. The latest of our customer solutions to be refreshed is Cathay Courier. The digitalisation at the heart of this solution encapsulates a lot of what we are trying to achieve – greater efficiency, higher levels of service to individual customers, and enhanced shipment visibility with piece level tracking. This year will see the refresh of three more of our products, starting early this year with our perishables solution, Cathay Fresh, and then followed by Cathay Live Animal and Cathay DG.

A returning Brussels and Miami open up the pharma corridors

We will be continuing to expand our capacity as the passenger network in 2025. Just before Christmas, we announced our return to Brussels and the launch of Munich as a passenger service. And we have just announced the seasonal return of Rome.

The return of Brussels is significant as it reactivates the first Pharma.Aero pharma corridor to and from our home hub for us, while late last year, Cathay Cargo helped validate the pharma corridor between Hong Kong and Miami, which picks up shipments from the pharma manufacturing hub of Puerto Rico for distribution across Asia.

Happy Year of the Snake!

This month is not just the start of the calendar year: it also includes the Lunar New Year. 2025 is the Year of the Snake, which signals adaptability, creativity and long-term planning – and that is very much the path that we are on. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone the very best for the coming year and a hearty kung hei fat choi. Let’s make 2025 a good one.
